A local Cebu paper wrote about last year’s third place winner Belinda Granger telling Iron Man dot com and I quote “I have never experienced that amount of support out there …I think every single person that lives on the island and surrounds the island was out there cheering! You guys should be extremely proud of yourselves. Never have I experienced that in all my years of racing,” end of quote.

When I came here during the press conference last year, I promised the organizers that we will roll out the red carpet for all of you.

I told them that our city of Lapu-Lapu will deploy 25,000 well-wishers along the city’s 12 kilometer race route.

I also promised them that we will set sail over 50 vintas with home made drum instruments to cheer on the athletes while swimming along the Hilutungan channel.

I stand here, proud to inform you that we have delivered on our promise.

And the statement of Belinda which i quoted earlier is a testament of what we were able to accomplished.

Today, once more, before all of you, I will again make the same vow…to provide at least 25,000 cheerers along the race and some 50 colorful vintas in our seas.

Like last year we will spruce up the Discovery Bay commonly known as Mangal.

We will put up a fisherman’s village and set up 100 tents complete with well wishers.

The organizers has indeed chosen a perfect spot for the turn-around of the run because it has a 180 degrees view of the sea and it tells a story of our past.

The area is named after the father of Lapu-Lapu, the first Filipino hero.

A large stone at sea, protruding at the tip of the northern part of Mactan Island, is believed to be Datu Mangal who hardened into stone after a fierce battle with Capitancello.

This is simply the best we can offer…a scenic view with historic relevance of us Oponganons!

To the organizers…thank you so much for

giving Lapu-Lapu City the honor to host this international and prestigious race.

My administration will not leave any stone unturned as we prepare to roll out the red carpet for the athletes, their families and guests.

We will make sure that when you go back to your respective places after the race, you will bring with you only happy memories.

Because it is double the fun in Lapu-Lapu City.
