World Startup Report at the Geeks on a Beach

As startup communities of potentially fast-growing tech businesses spread all over the world, the Geeks on a Beach confab this September 26-27 will bring the World Startup Report to the beaches of Boracay.

With the objective of boosting the local startup scene, TechTalks.ph organized the Geeks on a Beach to bring together Filipino startups and leading tech innovators from around the globe.

World Startup Report founder Bowei Gai will present the keynote address for #GOAB entitled “The World Startup Report: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities” on September 27.

Bowei Gai is a serial entrepreneur from Silicon Valley who sold the company he founded, CardMunch, to LinkedIn in 2011 before starting the World Startup Report.

The World Startup Report aims to document the world’s startup communities through a series of reports, identify and empower local startups, and help connect these people to each other.

According to Bowei Gai, the rise of startups in the Philippines is favored by the country’s internet-aware, text-savvy young generation and significant English-speaking population. “The Filipino startup community is still in the infancy stage but the country is ripe with opportunities,” said Bowei Gai.

This is further favored by the country’s talented human resources. “Startups don’t need big investment to start off. All they need is a computer, internet connectivity and a business idea.  With a passion to launch their startup, they can start building and coding on their web-based service or mobile application without investing in office space or expensive equipment. Once they have a viable product, they can sell it right away” said TechTalks.ph founder Tina Amper.

For PRworks director Doris Mongaya, the rise of Filipino startup communities with successful startups means the growth of Filipino-owned global businesses. “This will generate employment with the profits going back to Pinoy hands,” she said.

The first Geeks on a Beach panel discussion on the “World Startup Ecosystem: Distinguishing the Asian Experience during the first day will be led by Bowei Gai.

There will also be another panel discussion from the World Startup Report ambassadors on the situation of startups in different parts of the world on the second day of #GOAB.

Eden Shochat of Aleph.vc will tackle the startup scene in Israel while Khailee Ng and Paul Singh, both of 500 Startups, will present the state of startups in Asia and North America respectively.

In these discussions, participants will see the diverse and interesting profiles of the people and places that are bound to have a significant impact on the future of business and technology.

Apart from the learning and business opportunities, Geeks on a Beach will also feature networking events, fire pitches, film showings, and other fun activities in the white sand beaches of Boracay.
